An adolescent is neither a child or an adult. The adolescent has had plenty of years of experience of being a child but has reached a point where they are beginning to make their first experiments in being an adult. I think it must be like the difference between a baby and a young toddler. The baby spends it's days mainly sleeping. The toddler, on wobbly legs is just beginning to venture out from that safe place, the crib. The adolescent is also making those first few steps of independence. This time, from the nest that has been his or her home into a world where it is expected to be independent and successful

The adolescent child is trying to find their way in the world. They are attempting to spread their wings and find their niche through friends, activities or hobbies. They become more independent from their parents and spend more time with their friends especially on the phone.

I would suggest reading about adolescent psychology on the web. Also you could check out Tanner's stages of sexual development to learn about pubertal issues.

By all means, do NOT hang around with adolescent children! You might be tempted to give up your teaching ambitions, LOL

See the book YARDSTICKS to help you. It gives a snapshot of each age.
