My opinion is that there less rain forest alters our climate so we need to do something about it. I think the solution would be to let the rain forest grow back allow the rain forest naturally clean the air, plan more trees and educate and/or compensate those that need it. There are other industries tha be created that do less environmental damage and that can benefit all.

Every country has control of it's own resources. Rain forests may be considered an important one because the subject is soo politically correct and has been talked to death. People should be more interested and involved in what they can control. The USA and Canada has a lot of desert type land . If you , and Suzuki and all the other "enviromentalist" care so much about Rain forests and the greening of the planet, why is it no one has suggested planting grasses and trees in thoes places?
Here is something to think about.
What is your definition of destroying? The local farmers burn the brush back to reclaim land because they can only use the soil for a few years, it's that poor in nutrition. The act of burning the brush does raise the crop viability. LOggers are harvesting the timber, creating jobs where there were'nt any in the first place. Any clear cut area in a rainforest is quickly reclaimed by nature so that greening hasn't been impacted as much as , say, northern Ontario. The growing season there is so short and non sustainable with the amount of extraction that is done.
So where are we? We are telling everyone else to watch their use of the raw resources ,
but of course we will do what we have to; make another lift of 2x4's and another skid full of toilet paper.
I live here in the north of Ont. I see the way we manage our forests. The hypocricy concerning raw resources is never ending and fueled by ignorance and repetition.

I'm going to have to disagree with Cysteine. If a country was attacking us we would have a right to respond. Hence if a country is threatening the very survival of the planet we are obliged to respond, albeit via peaceful channels.
One of the biggest offenders is Indonesia. It' night a matter of chopping trees down but rather burning off square miles of forest so crops can be planted. It costs more to do Eco-efficient clearing. This happens every year and is beginning now.
The Indonesian Government knows full well who's doing it but only makes noise about it. Some body's pockets are being lined to protect the perpetrator. The smoke from these fires is so bad it affects air quality in countries hundreds of miles away and even affect flights. That's a lot of oxygen producing echo-system being turned in to CO2.
If the government would seize land that's been set alight and donated it or sold it cheap to any of the hundreds living below the poverty line so they had a source of income; it would cease overnight. But they won't do that cuz some politician won't get his cut.
They are playing with Global survival. Why can't we put Trade Sanctions in place? One problem is beside being the fourth most populous nation on it's 19,000 islands it's also the most populous Islamic Nation.
Maybe that's why we don't act. If you want to see the depth of the Governments concern for environment or people, Google, 'Mud Volcano'. That quagmire because Lapindo, owned by one of the Ministers saved a few thousand dollars but not running casing when they drilled. Casing is a steel liner for the well that prevents high pressures found at depth from fracturing the more fragile formations at lower depths.
In this case the pressure got out of control and when they tried to hold it back it blew threw the formation. This is but one of the sites: http://asia.news.yahoo.com/060928/ap/d8ke3e5g0.html
Yes we can do something!! Anybody want to say why we shouldn't? you want to leave it to Iceland since it's mostly their ice that's melting?

It's a waste of an important, and unique ecosytem. However, rainforest are located in other parts of the world, and within the terriorties of other countries. So what we think about it, unfortunately matters very little.
