No, enemas are not standard today. My oldest is 16 and I didn't not have one then either. I delivered all 4 via c-section. You may have one after delivery if you have trouble with a bowl movement, but that is more for women who deliver via c-section.

Well, every hospital is different. My doctor ordered them for all her patients. Alot of doctors agree that cleaning out the lower intestine clears up space for the baby to work it's way out easier. When I had mine, it was seriously no big deal. You just have to sit on the toilet for a while and wait till it's done (yuck!), never heard of having to use a bedpan. I tried to make sure I was "all cleaned out" before my induction day too, but you'd be surprised how much can be hiding up there...lol. During labor I did not have a bowel movement, so I guess if anything it spares you from that! Also, if you go into labor naturally and are already far along when you get to the hospital, you may not have time for an enema anyway. Ask your doctor if he/she requires them or if the hospital does. Good luck!

It may be a concern u have ,that was my fear of pooping on the doctor .Honestly when u r in labor who cares you have tons of stranger in ur buisness anyways u r in pain just focus on getting that baby out. As for enemas i never had one and neither has my sisters . If u request one maybe the doctor would do it but the thought of that is gross too. Good Luck!

No enema. If you do happen to have some feces pass during the birth, it is normal. Most, if not all women do. It doesn't shock the doc. He simply grabs a tissue he has there for that purpose and wipes it away.
Your body will enter labor prepared for it. You don't need to do anything but be there!

Dear deception,
...the unthinkable happened to me on the table 43 years ago, and I never forgot it - how embarassing - thank goodness that there are understanding nurses right next to the screaming doctor...in those days your hands and feet were bound to the table, so you were really at their mercy.
About the enema question I don't how the maternity wards deal with this today. The only thing I can suggest is to keep up your fluid level during your pregnancy so you won't end up with something........while delivering. Good luck, and happy delivery.

it is totally up to you to have an enema or not. with my first pregnancy i had the nurse from hell (she was more concerned with phone calls than taking care of me) and she never came in quick when i needed to go to the potty so i said i opted to have an enema so i would get it over with, but she made me lay on the bed (she wanted me there for 5 minutes holding it...UNREALISTIC!!!) and sad to say and gross i went all over the place. i was crying and emotional. so i would opt to not have an enema. it wasn't a good experience for me. just try not to eat if you know are in labor.

I was not given an enema with any of my 3 children I do not think they do that anymore. Sweetie if you go while giving birth its not the first time the doctors deal with this

My best friend had a baby a couple months ago and she was very concerned with going to the bathroom while pushing. I don't think they gave her an enema (I'm sure you could request one though) but she was able to go prior to his delivery. Good luck!

They didn't give me one. You don't need it. The hospital staff is used to all the gross things that happen during labor. They just clean it up if you have a little accident. It's no big deal.

My son is almost 20 months old now and no I didn't have an enema. Thankfully I didn't poop during delivery like a lot of women do. I did have to use a bedpan to pee once. Yuck!
