Yes.

Since fascism requires some type of authoritarian control, and opposes the concepts of tolerance and diversity, it would need something to gain popular support in some majority.

Religion and nationalism are the two strong motivating factors.
You see it every day here, with people viciously attacking anyone who doesn't agree with their religion or politics. Those people have no problem ramming their beliefs down everyone else's throats. That's fascism, by its definition.

Sinclair Lewis was not the brightest bulb on the tree, and certainly wasn't the brightest political commentator.

Especially when at the time he wrote this the worst dictatorships in the world were founded upon ANTI-religious political beliefs (communism, nazism, etc) and were all based on calling for the proletariat, the workers to rise and unite.

Not a good call on his part, when those anti-religious dictatorships ended up murdering over 100,000,000 people last century.

Um, hate to point this out to you, but that quote from the past was speaking in the furture tense.

I'd have to say it's pretty accurate -- just change the tense so it describes what we've been seeing.

How about "When fascists stole America, they were wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."
