The other answer is true, that there will be alot of other immigrants that are nice, but there will also be lots and lots of nice people all around you who are citizens here.
The Indian people I work with are all very nice, and are friends with everyone around them. Sometimes they bring in foods from their country and we bring whatever we want to cook, and we have a food day, and we have lunch and share our food.
If you smile some and are social, you will make friends very quickly. You will also find that most major cities have a large Indian population where you can find familiar things, language, home decor, foods, that remind you of home.
Also, like everywhere you go in the world, you will find wonderful people, but you will also find people that are not so wonderful. No matter where you are, or what city, use good judgment on where you go, and who you trust. If you run into someone that isn't nice, just forget them. They are not worth worrying about.
I live in the middle of the south. There's no problem, depending on what kind of environment you'll be in.
If you are in a professional or educational environment, you won't find the ignorance based negative attitudes that are common among the uneducated or ignorant parts of the population. So, don't worry about some of the other answers to your question. You'll be perfectly fine.
I'm sure your move must seem scary, but you have a very exciting and fun adventure ahead of you.
Be aware that you can set up a voice over internet phone account on yahoo messenger, and you can talk to your family for only a few cents per minute. You can get a cam when you get here, for very little as well, and you can see them too.
Good luck!

some people are and some are not...it really depends on where you are going. not trying to make you nervous or anything, just being honest and "Welcome to the USA"!
