The Canadiens are nicknamed the Habs after the settlers in Quebec. They were called "les Habitants", the word Habitants is French for settlers/people that live in a certain area, so the Canadiens are nicknamed (for short) the Habs.

The Ranger went 50 years between cups. The hawks are nearing that number. The dead things had 40 year slump once as did the bruins. The Leafs have gone 40 years. It's been 14 since the Habs last won. LA and St Louis have never won in 40 years. Vancouver and Buffalo have never won in 36 years.
And the HABS is short for Les Habitants.

why don't you know your hockey. you don't even know how to spell the Montreal Canadiens its with an E not and A. it took the Red Wings 40 years to finally win a cup in 96 and the Habs won it every decade the Stanley cup has been awarded and they last won it in 93 and there's still 4 years till the end of this decade.

Habitants is the name used to refer to both the French settlers and the America-born inhabitants of French origin who farmed the land along the two shores of the St. Lawrence waterway in what is the present-day Province of Quebec in Canada.

It's shortened to Habs.

If you're going to ask a question, you're better off not to insult the answerers. Especially if the guy is a die-hard Montreal fan.
