I'm 15 and I want a lot of things out of life. I want to start looking in to things now, instead of waiting until the last minute. I want to serve other people. I thought about being a cop [and advancing up to a detective], a paramedic, a civil rights lawyer, and doctor. I want to be able to travel with my job. I also want to make a decent income. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Many communities have a "ride along" program with law enforcement and the fire department, so you could experience first hand what those jobs might entail. A lot of courtroom cases are open to the public, so find some civil rights trials in your area and decide if you like what you see.

You might also want to become a junior member of a community group like the Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. Their members are usually the civic leaders of the community - doctors, lawyers, and so on. Talk to them about what they like and don't like about their jobs and what's involved in terms of education and training. You may find opportunities for volunteer work or internships.

Another idea might be to take a few "service" vacations, where you travel to a location and spend a week building a school, working in a clinic, or volunteering in other ways. It's a good way to explore different countries and options. Because you are workign for the week, these are not generally as expensive as traveling to a resort or similar.

Last but not least, the Peace Corps has a need for people to work in different countries in a variety of service-oriented occupations. this might also be something you want to look into.

Getting a head start on those goals is a great thing at your age - best wishes for success.

These are all things that center around helping people and society so that says a whole lot. That shows that you are a good person and shows your leanings toward a career path.

Here's the thing.... you have a couple of years to decide and what you do now is not the be all end all. Those who just focus on one thing often find that later they just reach a certain place in their field. Why? Because they have not varied their experinces.

There are police explorer programs. You then come in contact with every job on your list. Hospitals have kind of the same thing. So when you apply for college you will look good and have a basis to work with.

Basically the military is best to lean toward when starting out. You learn about the world, people and your profession.

Start volunteering. You are never going to know if you'll like a job without seeing it firsthand. Most hospitals, police stations, and other government agencies have volunteer programs for teens.

I think it's great you are thinking about what you want to do now. A lot of people wait until they are in college and end up spending more time there than they should. Good luck on finding your bliss.

Dear Friend,
Very good. I appreciate your interests. To serve others, you need not be a full-time volunteer social worker. You can choose any career path. But always be the highest scorer both in academics as well as your professional career. But do not forget to spend atleast 10% of your earnings for the purpose of charity. By this way you can do more for others than ever before. Wish you all the success.
Regards.
