Companies need to at least have a "business card" website that shows hours of operation, location, phone number, etc. The phone book is on its way out. I always look online at Yahoo! local, or search to find a website. I usually get mad when I'm looking for a website, and a company doesn't have one.

Because the first place I look when I am looking for a product, is online. Even if I plan to go to the business in person I look it up ahead to be sure I am not wasting my time. My time means everything to me, the less I spend making phone calls or looking through the yellow pages or calling people I know for referrals, the happier I am.

Good luck.

PS You can pretty much tell who, of these answerers, understands that publicity equals stronger cash flow.

And, I would definitely visit a dental website before calling them. They have a business card site, I know the caliber. They have music playing and a slide show, I know the caliber.
They have nothing, I figure the dentist is too old to understand the value of a website and therefore maybe his own skills are stuck in the past.

Websites take the surprise out of dealing in the business of your life.

If you often wish you could communicate effectively with a broader range of clients / customers, publicly post answers to frequently asked questions, attract new customers, break in to new markets and take the market share from your competitors – then a website is a MUST!

A web site is like your giant public bulletin board where people can get information on how to find you, where you are located, what you have to offer, why your service is unique, and what’s new in your company. It also is easily updated and changed frequently, and is a communication forum through which your customers can communicate back to you with questions, concerns and feedback on their needs.

In todays competitive market you should always have some sort of website. This gives customers the information they need to make the decisions or whether our not to purchase from you.
You can also be more effective at avertising, have a larger amount of customers then just a brick and motor business.

Personally I think companies put too much in this. MOST companies dont need one. Lets say I am going to visit my Dentist. And I going to go to his web site? No. Now if I am going to buy a hard to find item, I will. So I think a company needs a web site if they are selling nationwide online. And only if its an item that you cant find in stores.

Because personally I find all new stores, products and services local to me via the internet. I need an electrician, I type in electrician my town, my state into a search engine to start finding out information.

A lot of people shop online nationwide and more importantly find people, places and things in their local community by using the Internet.

Good luck!!
