Here is your answer-I have rebuilt several gas grills
1. IF there is a grill that is immediately above the burner-and I mean 1" away-put the lava rocks on this grill-distribute them evenly-don't "stack" the lava rocks-there should then be a second grill for installation 6-7 inches above the burner
2 IF there is only one grill and it fits high above the burner -6-7 inches then the lava rocks need to be placed around the burner-with some larger pieces on top of the burner-
throw away any small rocks.

then throw a steak on-maybe some shrimp on a skewer-have a beer and enjoy

Lava Rock Grill

LJAY2000 has it right (if you didn't get or can't find the manufacturers owner's manual online). The idea with this type of grill is that the juices from the meat hit the hot lava rocks and vaporize, which provides the grilled flavor.

Please keep in mind that the lava rocks will absorb grease and degrade over time, so if you do a lot of grilling you'll want to replace them from time to time, like at the beginning of each grilling season or if you start having problems with flareups or notice that the grill doesn't seem to get as hot.

Many manufacturers of these kinds of grills recommend starting the grill on high to get the grilling surface searing hot, but then reduce the heat to direct-medium and close the lid (350°F to 375°F) for grilling things like steaks, pork chops and the like. We use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com for instructions on how to grill steaks of various cuts and thicknesses on our gas grill. It also has grilling tips.

Hope this helps.

Your grill should have a deflector sheild (a long thin strip of metal) that goes over the center of the burners. Put that in place, the surround the rest of the bottom area with the lava rocks so that some of the flame touches the rocks. This direct heat causes the rocks to act like charcoal. Then place the wire grill over that. Hope this helps.

There is a bottom rack that sits above the burners. That is where the rocks go. The flame does not have to hit them.

Put the rocks on a grill above the burner.
