While some good answers here, I dont know if there are any answers here that will help you, as we need a little more information.

Yes, connect directly to the cable/dsl modem using ethernet to make sure it works first. If you cant get on the net at this point, the router is not the problem. Then use this cable to go from the modem to the WAN port on the router. Since you have already defaulted the router many times, take another ethernet cable between the LAN port and your PC.

If all is good, you should also have internet here. Logon to the router by typing http://192.168.0.1 in your browser. Your id should be admin and the password should be password. Different models are different so check your specific model. Change the access password, and setup your wireless specifics like SSID and security encryption method and key. WPA is more secure than WEP. Make sure your wireless card on the laptop supports WPA - old ones do not. You need the encrypted key (not the passphrase used to create it) when you "connect to wireless network:. Once setup, I would log on to the router again and configure the wireless section to not broadcast the SSID, and turn on access lists in the router by adding your laptop to the allowed list, then turning the feature on. Good luck!

It depends, what is the model number of your Netgear Wireless Router? It should tell you on the bottom of the router. Once you get that number, go here:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

It's a site for port forwarding on routers, but you don't need to port foward. Go to the Netgear section and click on the model number of your router. It should give you an address like 192.168.x.x where x is a variable depending on the router. Type that number in your Internet Explorer box, and it will ask you for a username and password. That site also should have given you this information. Once into the router configuration, you should see something like a "Setup Wizard" command. Run that and it should configure your router.

Keep in mind, you MAY have to do this every time you reset your router. So, remember the process.

First make sure your internet connection actually works.

If you have a regular DSL modem, plug it in, and see if you can connect. If that works, then you will need to use the software that came with the router (or you can browse to it if you know the IP address) and go through all of the settings to see if there is something keeping it from connecting.
