They don't need to have Test match status to play in the World Cup just ODI (one day international) status.

The whole idea of allowing the smaller nations in is to boost world cricket, to make it more appealing and to raise its profile as a sport. There is a competition called the ICC Trophy which was held in 2005 which allowed the 'smaller nations' to qualify for the World Cup.

Contrary to popular belief there aren't just 16 nations who play one day but 97 are members of the ICC.

The 10 teams with Test status automatically qualified as did Kenya. Kenya qualified as they had been given ODI status until 2009 before the ICC Champions Trophy. 4 of the other 5 (Scotland, Ireland, Bermuda and Canada) reached the semi-finals of the ICC Trophy (actually Holland finished 5th) for which the prize was ODI status until 2009 and a place in the 2007 cricket World Cup.

Hope this explains why they are there!!!!

It's true that these teams are weak and don't actually stand a chance of getting far in the World Cup. But I think it's great that teams like Scotland, Ireland and Holland are in the tournament, everybody has to start off somewhere! Playing in the world cup will give them an invaluable experience, as they wouldn't get a chance to face international teams otherwise.

Look at Bangladesh, they were laughed at in the World Cup '99. 8 years on, and they've managed to beat India...playing big teams over the years has obviously helped them to improve. Ireland beat Pakistan and proved that a new team doesn't necessarily mean a bad team.

Also, from another point of view...new teams mean easy points for the experienced countries!

This is my opinion:

There are 8 decent sides & 8 not so good sides, i.e Scotland, etc.

In theory, the 8 decent sides will go through. So why not just have an 8 team tournament? I would say by having the minnows in the tournament, it builds up the excitement as the tournament starts off being predictable, then gets better and it gives the minnows a chance to improve by playing against better opposition.

Look at Ireland - they will now have 6 games against realy quality opposition. Hopefully a minnow like them can improve.

I know where you're coming from through and a couple experts on Sky agreed with you.

There are qualification rounds, there was a whole tournament to see who played in the Cricket World Cup from the 'minnows'.

Because they have been known to beat the bigger teams and win matches and the are very entertaining to watch and put no hoper players like Myself in a good frame of mind when we go to the crease playing Sunday Cricket

Maybe there are so few national Cricket teams in the world, that no qualifying rounds are needed.

Why not? They have a cricket team and are part of the world. Surely this qualifies them.

This is to help spread the popularity of Cricket to more people in more countries.
Someday, the level of play may rise to that of other countries and benefit the sport.
