its just that we were doing french and the french teacher spelt paid like payed
and a girl told her if that was how u spell it
she said u can spell it both ways maybe thats only in french though

I would have said that the past tense and past participle of pay would be paid, and Chambers agrees, but Merriam-Webster -- http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/pay -- includes payed as 'to slacken (as a rope) and allow to run out -- used with out'.
So you can spell it both ways but they mean different things.
