i bought a part about 6 months ago for a 1996 buick skylark custom. the part didnt fix the problem and i dont know if its the timing or some electrical problem. when i start it, it stays started for a minute or 2 and then it dies and i start it again and its dies within 10 seconds and it backfires a bit sometimes and shakes when its dieing. its not idling like it should be. i have to step on the gas and the break to put it in drive or reverse to keep it from dieing. can someone tell me whats wrong with my car? it would help a lot thanks!!

Sounds like a vacuum leak.

Look around the engine's intake for a hose that may have come off.

It is very difficult to diagnose a car problem without a lot of questions asked and a lot of good solid answers, so this may not be the format for your problem.
That said, it sounds like you may have a bad Mass AirFlow (MAF) Sensor. Does the check engine light come on? If so, you can take the car to a car parts store like O'Reilly or Pep Boys or Advance Auto. They will have a On Board Diagnostics (OBD) gauge that should be able to help diagnose the problem, and they will do this for FREE!
Other than this the most obvious things to check for are loose plugs to the MAF sensor and loose or cracked and broken vacuum lines in the engine bay.

Good luck!

Could be a vacuum leak at the fuel pressure regulator or the regulator is bad.Could be a bad fuel pump or plugged filter.I believe it is one of the four things I have mentioned.Try having the fuel filter changed first.

sounds like it needs a complete tune-up. and if that don't fix it, check the timing, back-fire n is related to it being out of time.if it needs a tune-up that would cause the timing to be off. i would do complete tune-up 1st. then check timing belt, it could have a timing chain too tho. some have belts some have chain.

No one is going to be able to tell you what is wrong without looking at your car. I would suggest perhaps dirty fuel injectors or dirty fuel filter. Those are your least expensive items to start with anyway.
