Probably 5-1 relative to old-time hockey. You used to have fighters on every single team in every single lineup. Now there are only a few major scrappers left.

Back in the day people fought about the same amount they do today. The style of play has changed though. Especially since the mid-90's with Jerseys defensive strategies.
Back in the day it was all about good skating skills, speed, and stick handling. Today the game is much more physical. It's about the body as much as it is about stick handling skills. Everybody does the dump and chase tactic like every second play... you just don't see that in old time hockey.

It's almost non-existent now. Look at stats from the 70's or 80's and you'll find tons of guys who topped 400 penalty minutes. Dave Schultz had 470 one year. What did we have last year 1 or 2 guys that hit 200? Also look at the team stats from back then and you'll find 10 or more guys on each team that topped 100 penalty minutes...now some teams don't have a single player hit 100.

Fighting in hockey has certainly decreased since I can remember (back to the 1950's). Bench-clearing brawls especially have been eliminated from the game, thanks to the stiffer penalties and fines. It was common to see a bench-clearer in the era of the Broad Street Bullies (with Dave Schultz and friends),the St. Louis Blues (with the Plager brothers) and the Penguins (Battleship Kelly and Steve Durbano).

Last stat I saw said fighting had declined 60% since the instigator rule was put into place. Compared to the seventies when goon hockey was king, it's down more than 80%.

Much more rare. The non-hockey world needs to get a grip, and butt out!

They should let them scrap more, i used to watch Bob Probert pummel people and every team needs a guy like that . Cam Jannsen reminds me of him.
