Part of that is knowing when to spray for weeds, when to spray for bugs, when to fertilize, when to water, when to sow seeds, and aerating. So basically it's when, when, when.
First, your lawn needs about an inch of water a week. Too much can kill the roots and make them rot. Too little can stunt, wilt, or kill the grass.
Secondly, weeds need treated in the fall. A weed killer may not actually kill the weed totally off. But if you weaken it in the fall before winter hits, then the winter cold may finish the job that the weed killer didn't totally finish. Don't treat for weeds in the summer...that is when your grass is weak and you will more or less kill off the grass rather than your weeds.
Don't wait till summer to sow grass seed. Plant it in the fall through spring...and yes...that even includes winter. Grass grows and germinates in the spring and fall. Winter works well because the freezing and thawing of the ground helps work the grass seeds into the ground to germinate come spring. One master gardener in a book I read recommends sowing grass right on top of the snow.
Treat for grubs and other insects in the spring and fall. Grubs as larvae will eat the roots of your grass and create brown spots in your yard where they have eaten the grass roots. From what I've read...come summer the larvae hatch and become Japanese Beetles. Then they feast on your flowers and garden plants. Don't put out the beetle traps they only attract them to your place.
Aerate the lawn a couple times a year. This can be done by simply wearing golf shoes while using the push mower or by renting a machine that removes grass plugs to aerate the lawn.
As far as fertilizing, make sure you give your lawn a good fertiling in the spring to give it a good start. Throughout growing season fertilize it about once every 2-3 weeks or so.
Lastly dethatch or remove the dead grass clippings from your yard. If you have a bagger, use it to help collect the grass. The dead grass only gives a place for insects to live and it also can help cause disease to start in your grass.
The quality of your lawn won't change overnight. It will take 2-3 years to start seeing your lawn come around.

high nitrogen content makes it look nice and grow fast however it doesnt do much for the root system! keep on your weeds in the spring with a premergent. thats for crabgrass and such .you will also need a broad leaf killer for dandions ! for the lawn itself , take a sample of siol and call your local university and have it tested to see what your soil is lacking .this way you can give your grass exactly what it needs making your lawn the envy of the neighborhood! cutting height is also important! 3" is what comercial companys cut at. to short and you kill gras leaving places for weeds to grow .to long and it dies as well .also do not get stuck in one pattern when u mow ! it is best for the grass if you allways cut in a different direction than u did the time before . this makes the grass lean toward the sun making it stronger and greener! good luck

Unfortunately, they poison the heck out of everything in sight, including bords and butterflies.
They have to have Hazmat cetification to use it.
There are studies showing that stuff gives cancer to pets and possibly children.
