It is contingent upon rapport and the circumstances. Some people think direct is the best but they fail to realize the self-esteem of the person being questioned. If you want simple answers like yes or no, then the research says go with direct questions. If you want to get more information in the answer, then go with indirect. Some people prefer to be asked direct questions and others indirect. The rapport established helps determine the type of questioning approach. Most people do not like to beat around the bush and at the same time, do not like getting beat up either.

It depends on the reason for the question. If you are taking a poll and need percentages of people for something, direct questions. If you are doing a narrative or questioning feelings and experiences, indirect, because it encourages more conversation.

I prefer the indirect questions. The interpretation of it by each individual is so mind opening sometimes! Where some direct questions are as blunt as my kitchen knife, and more of a bad taste.

It depends what kind of information you are trying to elicit. Indirect questions will perhaps encourage an individual to be more open with their answers, and give you a better idea of their justification for them, too.

Direct. Getting straight to the point is better than beating around the bush. Saves time and energy.

If direct questions are asked, direct and better answers are given because the Answerer doesn't have to guess at what question is being asked.

I am a very direct person so in my case I'd like direct questions, and would give direct answers. The problem with me is....if you ask don't be afraid to hear the answer!! Some people don't like to hear the truth I'm afraid.
So it would depend I think on the person you are directing the questons to, and why.
