If you are already pregnant, it is considered a pre-existing condition and will not be covered.

I worked in an insurance company for a few years, and I have never run across just maternity insurance. I do know that sometimes you can prepay the hospital and doctors for the cost of delivery and the hospital stay if you do not have maternity insurance, and they will give you a discounted rate (generally around $5,000 total, which I know doesn't sound like much of a discount). You can also use a midwife, which costs less, or do whatever you can to keep your expenses at the hospital down (take diapers and sanitary napkins with you because they charge up to $1 each for them, etc). Good luck!

Probably not because they would have a very hard time making any money on it. Insurance companies operate for profit, so overall they need to collect more money in premiums than they're paying out or they go bankrupt.
If they let people buy maternity insurance right before they got pregnant they would lose a fortune. The only way you can get it usually is through a group plan- i.e. the company you or your partner works for includes it for all of their employee's. That way the cost averages down.

well, this is better than nothing. my mother signed me up for supplemental insurance through Aflac, in addition to my regular insurance kind of like a bonus.
i am not sure if it just works for in the state of Iowa, but aflac considers pregnancy a sickness.
to make a long story short, they will pay you money for days spent in hospital, including the baby after it is born. they will pay up to five days spent in the hospital ($100 each day, for you and the baby, so $200 a day for up to five days). they will also pay you up to $25 for each time you need to go for an OB/GYN appt up to 6 times a year.
THIS IS JUST A SAMPLE of what they offer under Hospital Confinement Sickness and Hospital Confimenment Indemnity. they offer more for different situations and emergencies.
i don't have my paper work with me to explain all of the other benefits. the plan must be started by the 3rd month of pregnancy. i pay about $110 a month until the baby is born, and I can end the insurance after the baby is born if I want to. The minimum amount of money I can get is $2700, if the baby is born before due date, and maximum is $5700 if born on or after due date -- for staying the hospital for a total of 2 days.
this may vary state to state.

I have never heard of just maternity insurance. Normally pregnancy is just covered under regular medical health insurance.

Medicaid covers maternity costs. But, you have to be under a certain amount of income to qualify for Medicaid.
