Is the way she handles Tony the way a psychiatrist in the real world would?

It's hard to say, especially in during later in the series when she tells her own psychiatrist that she had feelings for him when he first started coming to her. It's clear that she is actually attracted to him, mainly because he is so powerful. I think psychiatry wise she is treating him the way pretty much any psychiatrist would... listening to his problems, trying to help him understand how his past has affected him, and prescribing the correct medication for him. However, considering he is a mob boss, it's hard to know exactly how a psychiatrist would treat someone of that stature.

It depends on what type of psychiatrist you go to. There are several schools of reasoning in psychiatry.
