I work at a grocery store, and when we first got word of that, we pulled all the necessary food off the shelf. What i think is funny, is that the REALLY expensive stuff was pulled along with the REALLY cheap stuff...and only one kind was recalled, lol. Will this make people stop paying outrageous prices for Eukanuba dog food and other high end brands, when they realize the store brand is the same exact thing?

I understand your point. I work at Wal Mart and the recall was massive. Our shelves are empty. So I too wonder about why pay so much if the same ingredients can be found in the "cheaper brand". It just goes to show you how society likes to buy the name of the product as much as the product itself.

I don't think the recall was funny at all. My heart really goes out to the number of people that lost their beloved pets because of this corporate screw-up.

I understand the point you're trying to make however.

A lot of people buy products or are lured into buying products without properly researching what actually goes into them. It isn't just with pet food, but organic food, livestock, clothing, electronics etc...

I find it outright scary how these large corporations own multiple labels in a monopolistic kind of way. You will find a lot of this in the livestock/agriculture industry as well.

What ends up happening: Larger companies buy out smaller businesses and then produce their products on mass scales. They all purchase from the same companies in an effort to save money.

Everything that has to do with the media/marketing is mislabeled these days and this, is a prime example of what is happening in the US. Genuinely decent and small companies get run over and stepped on, while the large corporate guys take over caring little for their customers or their needs.

In any case, no matter how large/small the company is, they have a legal right to make sure that their product fits at least certain standards.

It's just aggravating. Hell, the onions in your supermarket may just come from illegal immigrants working fields in Texas and you would never know.

On that note: I posted a really neat link.

Actually it's not all the same thing and the store kind isn't whats best for dogs-- yes it's the cheapest but obviously a GROCERY store doesn't specialize in keeping dogs diets balanced and healthy-- but the highly qualified nutritionists at Eukanuba and Iams etc... DO.

They aren't all the same thing and both expensive and cheap were pulled because they use the same *new* gluten supplier ( an ingrediant in dog food) and the gluten they supplied was contaminated. WOW ignorance.

It's actually not unusual. It's more cost effective for most places to have a specific type of food processed at the same plant. It doesn't matter if it's top end brand(or percieved top end, I should say), or bottem of the barrel brand- it's all processed at the same plant.

That's why we should all read pet food labels to really see what the good stuff is.

I agree that the brands are all the same in some ways to make the wet stick together but IT IS NOT FUNNY!!!

There is nothing funny when someone's dog or cat dies!!!

Are you a sick freak or what?

No, I don't think its funny, if you look at your labels, every food company makes other brands, same product different label. I'm glad my pet is on a special allergy diet.

Not really.

I mean, if there was a recal for chocolate cake, cookies, and bread, would you assume they were the same, or could it be possible a common ingredient (like flour) may be the one toxic element.

well..since it's over 90 brands of food that are affected I'd assume that one of the ingredients that was contaminated that was used in all the brands/ i dont necessarily think the foods are the exact same...... however, i still think its ridiculous to pay those high prices cause all the foods really are pretty similar.
