I often see them on the beach and they crawl into the shells when frightened.

yes you can, but you'll need a saltwater tank set up for them, they're a good first step into keeping a marine tank. watch out though, just the set up for a marine tank can get quite expensive!

hermits will eat algae and food waste, they're a part of the cleaning crew marine tank-keepers often add to their marine tank.

watch out you don't get them confused with the land-hermit crabs, which would die fully submerged in water!

Most people that keep those types of hermits keep them in saltwater fish/reef tanks as "cleaners". They are scavengers feeding off leftover food, decomposing organic matter (aka dead critters) , and algae. They can range in size from a few centimeters across...to 3-4 inches depending on the species. Most people keep what they call "scarlet" hermits and "blue legged" hermits.

ya i dont think u see hermt crabs at the beach. but idk cuz i never do but if u go to ur petstore they have hermit crab kits and stuff for them
