Lizzie Borden took an axe,
Gave her father 40 whacks,
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her mother 41.

Did you just watch that show on the travel channel? I did too. If you did.

There's the ryme!

Ruth has the poem right, but also Lizzie Borden was acquitted of all charges, as there was not enough proof she had committed the crimes. She died alone in the house on the hill.

That's the rime, all right. Its details are and always were wildly inaccurate. Her stepmother was murdered over an hour before her father, and the number of whacks, though impressive, was in both cases far lower.

She done it all right, but the jury simply couldn't believe a church-going spinster capable of such violence. They might have believed poison. Actually, she had tried to buy cyanide a couple of days before, but the pharmacist wouldn't sell it to her. This was ruled inadmissible at the trial.

She bought a fancy new house after her acquittal, where she frolicked with actresses, and lived, happily or not, for another 35 years.

She actually only did about 13 to each parent, not that we need more, but a far cry from 40! I think she did it, but the crime scene was totally ruined before they even started to investigate!
