You should learn math first.

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/2 is more than 1. (1 1/6)

No wonder you lost some.

It could work if you keep re-adjusting to the remaining total:

27 pieces of gold and 1/3 lost leaves 18

18 pieces of gold and 1/3 buried leaves 12

12 pieces of gold and 1/2 given away leave 6
