Check out this months PC Answers mag in the newsagents, it has a free version of Quark. Its a pro desktop publishing program. Open Office also has one in its free office suite, plus you can download the turorials. You can download the whole suite or just the programs you want.
For image editing theres The Gimp and PaintdotNet.

If you have microsoft publisher which is part of the office package this would be the program to use as this is a fairly simple program to use to get effective results.

Software won't design your brochure, you have to use your brain.

But I recommend Word or Publisher, which both have wizards for the non-design orientated. Remember the KISS principle, Keep It Simple Stupid.

You can also look for free templates for Word or Publisher online.

microsoft publisher is good, you can download a 60 day trial from www.microsoft.com
