What???!!!
Either you're a man or didn't listen in sex ed.

Depo Provera and other methods of birth control only prevent pregnancy (most of the time). They do not stop menstruation. There are birth control pills that allow for only 4 periods a year (http://www.seasonale.com/). Other than birth control using the extended period dosing, surgery (a hysterectomy) is the only other method to stop periods permanently. You won't die from not having periods (think about it... if women died from not having periods, then all women would die after menopause).
As for the advantages and disadvantages of menstruation, they vary. For women with normal periods (no gynecological problems), the disadvantage is the mess, cramps, and PMS caused by menstruating. The advantage of menstruation is being able to have babies.

"What is Depo-Provera?
Depo-Provera is an injection containing the synthetic hormone progestin which is called depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). Depo-Provera is a hormonal method of contraception obtained by prescription.

How does Depo-Provera work?
Depo-Provera works through the synthetic hormone (DMPA) which helps regulate a woman's ovaries similar to the way the natural hormone progesterone works.

Depo-Provera prevents pregnancy in one of three ways:
First, it prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg, which is also known as ovulation.
Second, it thickens the cervical mucus which acts as a barrier preventing the sperm from reaching the egg.
Third, it changes the lining of the uterus preventing implantation. Ethical Consideration.
How do you use Depo-Provera?
Depo-Provera is a prescription and the injection is obtained from your healthcare provider every 11 to 13 weeks. The healthcare provider will inject the synthetic hormone in the upper arm or in the buttocks. The initial injection is given within the first five days of your menstrual bleeding. Follow up injections are repeated every 11 to 13 weeks.

How effective is Depo-Provera?
Depo-Provera has a failure rate of less than 1% when it is used correctly and consistently. When used correctly only three in 1,000 women will get pregnant. You should take a pregnancy test if you are experiencing any pregnancy symptoms.

What are the side effects or health risks of Depo-Provera?
Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect. For some there may be increased light spotting and breakthrough bleeding, whereas others may experience longer and heavier bleeding. For most women, after a year of use periods usually become fewer and lighter or may stop altogether.

Depo-Provera has side effects similar to those experienced by users of oral or other hormonal types of contraception which include:

Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea
Breast tenderness
Fatigue
Moderate weight gain
Change of appetite
Other reported side effects include: acne, anxiety, backaches, bloating, depression, leg cramps, hair loss or excessive hair growth, or loss of sex drive.

You should not use the injections if you think you are pregnant; consult your physician about using Depo-Provera while breastfeeding

Depo-provera is a contraceptive shot given to help prevent pregnancy(It can fail though-my youngest was concieved while I was getting the shot)
I can decrease and sometimes put a halt to menstrual cycles.

There is no OTC way to stop menstruation.

Birth control pills can be used to sometimes delay a period for awhile.

You can get pregnant if any semen comes in contact with the vagina. So its important to remember that only complete abstinence can prevent pregnancy. If you are ovulating you can get pregnant.

There is no concrete evidence to say using hormone related methods of mentrual suppression will or will not harm someone.

It is unlikely you will die from not menstruating, however if you have suddenly stopped mentruating it is a good idea to see a doctor to find out why.

I don't know anything about advantages or disadvantages about menstruation. But it is all a part of your life as a woman. Why be afraid of something that is only part of living. You can still enjoy life and be active. And as far as having sex .Why?Too many diseases out there to catch. There has been wild tales about periods for years.Ask Mom or a close relative that is knowledgeble. Not listen to crazy talk going around.

you will not die from not having a period. but womans bodies were designed to bleed so that can mess up your body and make getting pregnant in the future harder. The depo shot is something you get every 3 months at a docs office. it prevents pregnancy but you will still need a condom to protect you from stds. please talk to your mom or local teen pregnancy center. I assume you are young. they can give you free condoms and explain everything you need to know regarding safe sex and your period.
