Its not a simulation of intelligence, but actual machine intelligence (i.e., adapting to a task it has not before encountered and being able to learn from the experience).
A lot of games these days claim to utilise AI but the context in this case is a bit of a cheat. The game characters do not exhibit true AI as I would classify it.
I am not sure how close we are to true AI. In short, the end product is a thinking machine. It could happen any day, as I believe it soon will.
