because they have 4 wheels and all of them do the driving. A 6 wheel army truck is called a 6x6. 6 wheels, all with power to them

It is because it is possible to have all four wheels under power, this makes the safer on greasy roads if all four wheels are in drive. From this it can be deduced that a fiat Panda 4x4 is safer than the equivalent Panda 2x4
Lorries can be say 6 wheeled but only 1 driving axle.
Many army type vehicles for offroading are of AWD that is to say all wheels drive as opposed to saying 8 wheel drive or whatever.
The long term ecological view has also to be looked at to pollution though. Small engines whilst initially economic, soon wear, due to high stress etc. This is why virtually all fords fail there emission at the first MOT.
My 40 year old Diesel Land Rover, although the test is not required passes it easily.
There are not many small cars on the road after that time, and think of the pollution in recycling.

The first number means how many wheels the vehicle has. The second means how many of the wheels have driving power. A truck only powered by the rear axle is called a 4X2. It is really only used for vehicles with 4 wheel drive and not all wheel drive, which is actually different.

Oh my god rinfrance's answer is a bunch of crap. I guess I can deduce from his answer that stupid people that try to sound intelligent actually sound dumber by doing so.

Four wheels, all four driven, for example a ordinary car could be called a 4x2, or a articulated lorry tractor may be a 6x2 if it has 3 axles and two wheels driven.

Normally i call 4x4's something else..................
