Hi, I have a phone interview with Sky (in the UK) for an installation engineer position. What sort of questions will they be asking?

I have my CV here and a reference details. I've written out several questions and answers but the one I have trouble with is ' Tell me about yourself'. I have no idea what to put.

Another questions I'm struggling with:

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

The "tell me about yourself" question is translated as "tell me about who you are at work." The employer doesn't want to know how many children you have, the cute thing your dog did last week, or how your last ski trip was. The appropriate answers are things like, "I'm a hard worker; I enjoy learning new things; I work well as part of a team or as an individual contributor; I'm good at leading people (examples please), etc."

The "five years from now" question (one of the most banal of interview questions in my book; I never use it) is designed to determine your ambition. The problem is that many people are content to do what they do well and have no aspirations toward world domination. Saying that you hope to further expand your knowledge of engineering by working on (company's name) products is an acceptable answer, or that you want to go back to school to get some additional education in (subject), or that you are interested in moving into management (the typical answer to the banal question.)

The purpose of a phone interivew is to determine if you are a decent enough candidate to bring in for an in-person interview without wasting everyone's time. Enunciate, use a land line if possible, keep your answers brief without being abrupt (they will ask for more detail, and if you drone on you are just inviting the interviewer to start checking e-mail.) Modulate your voice (no screeching, snorting, wheezing, etc.) and be sure to have a list of questions handy to ask the interviewer so that they will get the sense you're excited about the opportunity.

Best of luck!
