I've had hamsters before, but I'm thinking about getting a guinea pig. I want a guinea pig because they live longer and I can hold him more. But, hamsters are so easy to take care of. I'm debating what to get. How much more difficult is it to care for a guinea pig?

Guinea pigs are not more work over all, just more time. And they are much better at being handled and played with. Check out this site for some more info on piggies. Good Luck!!

guinea pigs NEED to be cleaned a lot more often. They are messy eaters and they drink a lot of water, so they tend to pee a lot. They are a lot more fun though. You can really tell when they like you and they make the cutest sounds. If you can get a big enough cage you should get 2 female guinea pigs (babies or 2 that have been raised together). Or you could try a baby guinea pig and a baby dwarf rabbit, that usually works well too. They really like the company. If you want less work with your guinea pig DO NOT get a long haired one! Very cute but they need to be brushed everyday and they need baths quite often as well.

Since a guinea pig is bigger than a hamster its a bit more important to clean its cage more often than a hamster.

Other than that its about the same .

A guinea pig is also easier to find if you let it out for a run and they bite less often .

We've had both in our family, and they require about the same amount of care, though it is much, much easier to be loving and interactive with a guinea pig. The only trick to a guinea pig is making sure you get it a big enough cage. GPs love to run around, so a tiny cage is not good for them.

I constantly preferred my guinea pigs larger than my peers hampsters, they may be able to be extra playful, and a lot more a laugh to cuddle :) The cost isn't that so much of a change, and they may be able to be messier due to the fact they'll require, undoubtedly, a better cage and extra shavings,
