Hello. When i sign into the internet and try and use the main toolbar (the big one at the very top of screen) it comes up with the page 'page cannot be found' when i type in a word i want to search for. For instance "houses" it will come up with the same 'page cannot be displayed'. However if i type in www.whateveriwanttosee.co.uk it comes up. Please can someone help? I don't know what to do. People have tried to help before i've tried everything and nothing works. Can someone who auctally understands computers help me?

some pages will always return an invalid page, for instance if you try typing a webpage that doesn't exist at all on the address bar....
Try typing this... www.yahoo.com see if it works..

Are you using the Toolbar at the top to search( i.e. the Address bar) ?
You may be better served to use a Search engine of Choice.
Something like metacrawler.com or whatever engine you like and then search from there.
The symptoms you describe sound like a Security setting issue. It seems that your address bar is fine. The key thing to do is pick what you want as your search method. For example, is it easier for you to make your home page a search engine?, or would you like a little bar at the top to search from?
Okay, I just replicated what you should get: I typed in houses at the address bar, and I got the Results through a Search engine. That is, I think, you should be getting, but are not.
Okay, Closes I can come to what I think you want is go to Tools, Internet, Options, then Programs Tab, then click on RESET WEB SETTINGS, and that should restore your Search capacity from Address bar that you want... pls advise if that does not work
alternative:
Click on Search icon at the top. Then click on Change Preferences, then Change internet Search Behaviour; Then the options for you to pick the style of search you want will come up... Hopefully this alternative Reset will work.... I just tried it on my Test box and this change makes the resets that you seem to want work.

Ok, The Bar at the top of the screen is an address bar. you need to put something like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com. Those are two pretty good search engines. If you want to Do a search for certain things, you need to use a search engine. Or, at the top of the screen you see a button that sais search.... click that, then type what you are looking for in the bar that pops up on the left.

The bar you are talking about is called the Address Bar this is where you would put an Internet Address such as
http://google.com
if you want to Search "houses"
type www.google.com into the address bar and press enter
then on Google's page the is a Search Bar this is where you would put the search term
also there is usually (depending on what browser you use) a Search Bar in the upper right corner of the browser
in AOL it is just below the Address Bar
Hope this helps

Hi dyingofabreakingheart,
Give this a shot - Click Tools at the top of your screen, then select Internet Options, Click "Clear History", then Click "Delete Files".
Now Click on the Content tab.
Under Personal information click on the AutoComplete box.
On the AutoComplete Settings window click the Clear Forms box to delete your current history.
Good luck,
Norm

If you dont feel the need to do a reboot, no one is going to be able to help you. Its like saying that you cant get your car started, but you dont want to turn the engine over, if you want our help, your gonna have to reboot is that what you need to do. Sorry, you cant expect to just leave a computer on all the time and it to always be just fine.
Try typing in
http://www.google.com
Does that work, the bar at the top isnt for searching, its for the adress you want to go to. now reboot.

I think you are typing your searches into the wrong box. The one at the top contains the internet address (e.g. http://www.yahoo.com)
You need to enter the address of a search engine such as www.google.com or www.yahoo.com and then type your searches into the search boxes on those pages.
edit: sorry if that doesn't help, maybe you could try reinstalling your browser or better yet switch to firefox if you are using internet explorer.

It seems to me that you are typing search text into the web address (URL) field/ This means that if you type in "www.yahoo.com" it will work but Yahoo will not.
What you are after in order to search for content on the net is a search engine. The best (only in my opinion) in Google. Go to www.google.co.uk and type your search in the field that comes up in the middle of the screen.
Really hope that this helps.

the big bar at the top is for direct address entry. type www.google.com or www.yahoo.com in there - wait for the page to come up - and then type your search item in the 'search' box - you'll find that will work.

You may have had a google toolbar and deleted it...
Go to www.toolbar.google.com and download another toolbar.
This toolbar enables you to search for name right from your address bar... if you type house.. it takes you to a website related to houses.
