Tom Perrota's novel THE ELECTION was turned into a movie with the same name that starred Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon.
Alice Water's important novel THE COLOR PURPLE was turned into a movie of the same name. Both the novel and the film have been controversial.
Mureil Spark's delicious novel THE RPIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE was made into a film in the 1980s. It stars Maggie Smith in her most memorable role.
Graham Greene's Vietnam novel THE QUIET AMERICAN was the basis for the recent movie QUIET AMERICAN. (There was an earlier movie but it changed the point of the book.) His HONORARY COUNSEL was also made into a good movie also startting Michael Cane,.
and I could go on....

You think The Firm is crap? Okay, that's not a very charitable way to say it but you can't like everything.
If you want some real literature I can recommend Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. It even has a corresponding movie which is decent but not great. The book is great, however. It's about a British naval commander during the Napoleonic wars. It's the first of a series but each book stands on its own so you don't need to read them all.
Patrick O'brian was a prominent naval historical and a great writer. This is quality literature and historically educational and it's a thumping great read.

I assume you don't want old stuff like Robinson Crusoe and Moby ****. I like J. Irving and Cider House Rules is a book I own. The movie?-notsomuch but thats just me. I know at least 2 others by him have been made into films- A Prayer for Owen Meany and The Hotel New Hampshire. One of my personal favorite films is taken from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, that being Apocalyse Now. A book I liked that was also a movie I liked just as much is A Simple Plan by Scott Smith. Happy hunting- oh yeah, didn't Good Will Hunting come from a book?

If you liked Cider House Rules you may want to try "The World According to Garp (also by Irving) which had a movie made after it starring Robin Williams. Also Great Expectations had a somewhat modernized move made after it in 1998. I liked the movie better than the book!
