The exact number of Custer's men who died is not known. The serg'ts with him had the paybooks that listed the men in the troops. That information was lost to the Indians.
The number was about 220. I believe there are 242 stones marking 'the place a trooper fell" but some of those stones mark one burial, with dirt dug from each side and thrown over the body in the middle.
