1. Teaching. In the United States, university and college teaching requires a Ph.D. but not always. School teaching is a possibility, though this is often done by those with a Bachelor's degree and teacher training. You could choose to teach in a country other than your own, perhaps to teach those who wish to learn English as a second or third language. Try to get an idea of the various teaching possibilities.
2. A career involving writing. Companies look for people who can write their literature and pamphlets. Such a career may require practical experience, perhaps over the summer. Also, a job with book publishers, perhaps after a summer course in this area. Again, if this career appeals to you, explore possibilities.
3. If journalism interests you, you could get a diploma or degree in that field and go on to write for newspapers and magazines, perhaps even edit a magizine.
4. Finally, the course I pursued myself. Get a Ph.D., which may take three or more years, and go into university teaching and research.
The choice is between making a career in English literature or taking off in a related but different direction and pursuing one of the lines I suggested. Other lines will no doubt occur to you. Unless you go into teaching, English literature does not prepare you for a specific career in the sense in which, say, Civil Engineering ,does. This means you have to imagine and invent.
