My dad had a stroke a month ago & is in re-hab now. He can't sleep & has very bad muscle spasms & pain in his left side that was damaged. The nurse's only give him muscle spasm & pain medicine & this isn't working. What can my family do now? Is this normal for stroke victims? I am no doctor BUT I fill something is wrong. Should I get them to do another cat scan? HELP! From a concerned son....

Unfortunately, these symptoms are quite normal in stroke victims. You must understand that strokes happen in the brain and therefore can affect any number of neurological functions. If his medication isn't working to alleviate the muscle spasms and pain, then your family should consult his doctor. Express your concerns firmly but respectfully and let the doctor know that you are not satisfied with the level of care your dad is receiving. Usually, when doctors find out that they are dealing with rational, intelligent individuals who have their loved one's best interest at heart, they are more than willing to do all they can to help.

You have to take him to the doctor. A stroke is serious and I would think he should also be on other medications beyond meds for pain and muscle spasm. If you are not happy with your doctor, find another. Find someone who specializes in this field. Your dad probably needs ongoing medical treatment beyond what a nurse can provide. If your dad begins to feel better, so will you and your family.
