You mean, you as a customer use an electric vacuum - weird and off putting for the other customers and you may be asked to leave. Whereas, if some dirt is spotted, a member of staff may whip out the vacuum and clean, that should only last a few seconds, any longer and it's downright rude and off putting for eaters.

I am not aware of specific laws but I think that perhaps the Health Department might have an issue with it. If you sweep or vacuum in a room where someone is eating, there is a big chance that you will be contaminating the food, I think that is pretty unappealing and bad form on the part of the restaurant owner/manager.

depends on the state and local laws, but most often its against good taste and unless you really like the food and the place is utterly spotless I'd think twice before eating there. Especially if its a buffett where the particles and crud that vacuum can throw into the air can land and grow, etc.

the electric dust/ lint brooms, much like the push around manual ones with 2 brush wheels are ok and allowed, but thats just a large particle "scooper'

Where I'm from (Canada) it is against the Health and Saftey Regulations to sweep/vacuum in a restaurant while customers are eating/open hours. It is because if the dust kicked up/exhausted out could contaminate the food.

No, but being a waitress and a customer both it is very rude and inconsiderate. I have had it done to me several times, usually they have a hour before they close. But also it is the managers or owners fault because they want their sectioned cleaned before they leave but still insist on setting people in or around that section. My feeling is that they shouldn't be so cheap, hire a cleaning person to do it, but also if the floor is so bad at least pick up what you can with your hands. Even the quiet ones are bad enough when you are trying to enjoy your meal.

Never heard of it being illegal, but it's very disruptive and gross -- dirt flying -- and would probably put the patrons off and make them not come back!

Try using a non-electric sweeper -- a lot of restaurants use that when cleaning tables between customers.

No, it isn't, but as the first answerer said, it's extremely rude, and often used to shoo customers out.

It probably should be, as all the airborne particles that get blown around when vacuuming can contaminate food.

Why not? I'm not sure. People with allergies can't vacuum without a mask sometimes. This will stir up the dust. It should be the same as with people smoking. I demand equal rights!

i think it isnt, but it sure is disgusting, i had a waiter vaccuum around my table around 930 - they closed at 10pm and we were still eating chinese food, we told the waiter to stop and he got mad and told us to get the "F" out of his restaurant, we got up and i slammed my beer down on the table and the force of it made the beer foam up and squirt all over

the dust and the noise is nasty when its right near you, it should be illegal

you mean they're already cleaning up the place while there are customers inside? it is not illegal but it's definitely bad manners on their part. what are they trying to do, drive away their customers? i think it's so stupid of them to do that. don't eat there again even if their food is good.
