Had a book published? If so, what was the basic process and about how much did it cost? I'm interested in looking into the publishing world, but know nothing about it. If anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it. And also, if you HAVE had some sort of book published, could you include a link to the website about which company you used (if a site is available)? Lastly, is an agent really required? Or is it possible to bypass having one? Thank you!

I've had two books published and from my experience I see this from two points of view:

1) Get an agent who will find you a good publisher. This will cost you some money and it will take a while to be published (up to two years). A good publisher will help your book get some exposure.

2) Go the self-published route. This will cost you less money and you can be published quickly. Publish America, Lulu, and BookSurge are three decent choices. Getting exposure is soley up to you.

Either way you choose to do it, getting a book published and getting some exposure for it is going to cost you a little cash and time. It's an investment in yourself. Many people will tell you that it shouldn't cost you anything in time or money. This just isn't the case. I always ask people who say that, "How do you expect anyone (a publisher, an agent) to invest in you if you're not willing to invest in yourself?"

Good luck with your book,
