1) guinea pig or hamster
2) bird
3) reptile (snake, lizard, or turtle)

Those are my suggestions, just off the top of my head. Before you choose any pet, though, you need to read beforehand and see what you're getting into....just loving animals is not enough as far as proper care goes. Most small pets can be found at pet stores...but be careful...if possible, take someone with you who has the kind of pet you're looking for....also, ask for someone who works in that department. They'll know more about the animals and be able to answer questions better than someone just called from the register. Make a list of questions beforehand to ask both yourself and the employees, such as
1) What can you tell me about the care of the animal before it arrived here?
2) What accessories do I need to buy to keep my pet healthy and happy?
3) What does it eat? What can I not feed it?
4) Does the animal look healthy in appearance?
5) What's the level of customer satisfaction from your store with this animal?
You might also go to a store and tell an employee your problem (no dogs or cats....needs to live in a small space) and ask them to show you some different kinds of small pets that they have available. They will probably be glad to help. Don't be afraid to ask to speak to a different employee if you feel you're not getting the answers you're listening to. In any event, once you pick a pet to strike your fancy, run it by your parents and list the positive qualities (lives in a cage/tank in my room, minimal mess, easy to care for, more unique than a dog or cat, etc.) Give them sites to read about the animal or have them talk to the pet store. Chances are, if you're reasonable about this with them, they'll help you get a pet to love....and perhaps, eventually, you'll be able to keep dogs, cats, or maybe even more than one pet. Good luck!

I would suggest any of the small rodents - hampsters, gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pig, etc. You could even try a rabbit. I wouldn't suggest a bird as they can be VERY tempermental, expensive, and depending on the breed, live a long time.

Be careful where you get them, though. A friend of mine in college bought 3 guinea pigs from a popular pet store and they all died within a week. She had to keep bringing them back to get a new one. Turns out, there was some sort of respritory problem being passed along as, I think, they were all from the same breeder.

Local humane societys sometimes have small animals available for adoption, though typically have more cats and dogs. Try there first, though.

A pair of rats. Surprisingly they are as intelligent and affectionate as a tiny dog. Rats play with cat toys and run over to you and climb up your jeans when you walk into the room. They give kisses and love to be tickled. Mine use a litter box. If you get some real fancy ones from a hobby breeder they won't look so rat-like. Rex rats are curly, blue rats have a very pretty blue-gray coat and dumbo rats have big ears.

If you are in New England try On the Edge Rat. That is where I got two of my four boys and they are awesome!

Most small animals need daily exercise outside of a cage, so if you can't provide that get fish or some type of reptile. Anything else will probably keep you up at night as well.
