does anyone know of a website where I can search for a relative who fought in WW2? Using his serial number or something? A great grandfather of mine fought in Italy with the South Africans, and I'd like to find him in some kind of registry thing or something.

There is nothing that I know of on the web that lists this info. You'd need to contact the veterans department of whatever country he fought for. If US, contact Veteran's Affairs, they'll be able to steer you.

If you know what Unit/Company he fought with, you might find some history online of that particular group.

If he fought in the South Africa forces you should contact the South Africa Department of Defence at:

info@mil.za

Use the subject line "Military Veterans Affairs"

Good luck

You're not going to find serial numbers listed on any website. That's not public information. You need to take what you know the whatever branch of the military that your great grandfather served in.

Try this site:

http://www.nd.gov/hist/sal/gen/infmilitary.htm

It looks like they have a lot of information trying to obtain past service records. Hope this helps.
