If you had a small ferromagnetic object such as a needle, or something that could be magnetized, you could perhaps determine the direction of magnetic north by filling the sink with water and floating the needle on top of the water. You might be able to determine the country you're in by looking at the labeling on the bedclothes and the furniture and the sink. If you'd traveled a lot you might be able to get some ideas from tasting the water. You're not going to get any clear idea from the direction the water swirls down the drain; the Coriolis force isn't strong enough to be noticed in drains.

You are in a room. You could open the door and look out.

The drain thing doesn't work. The geometry of the sink is the most important factor in which direction the water rotates.

Check out the sink with running water. If the water sinks in the bottom clockwise, you're in the Northern Hemisphere. Otherwise, you're in the South Hemisphere...

That's all I know..
:p

Don't know. My suspicion is that you think the direction water swirls round the plug-hole can tell you your approximate latitude, or at least what hemisphere you're in. It cannot, in fact. Coriollis effect is too weak on this scale.

Well. First you empty your pockets. Then assemble the contents into a rudimentary GPS. From this you can determine where you are.
