Today, Friday, March 23, I got an email from a friend saying that he will visit me next Wednesday. It was writen like this...

"I will visit you next Wednesday."

Does it mean he will visit on March 28th or does it mean he will visit on April 4th?

Next Wednesday means the Wednesday following the day it was said/written, so it would be March 28th.

Seems like you're complaining rather than asking. :-) If so, I second the complaint. But, to answer it as if it were a question: The phrase "the "next " means "in the sequence being considered in the current context, the immediately following the being considered." Problems arise when different people assume different contexts. For example, if you use the phrase "next Thursday" when you're speaking on Monday, some people think you mean Thursday three days hence and others think you mean Thursday ten days hence. But if you use the same phrase while speaking on Friday, everybody takes it to mean Thursday six days hence. In the specific phrase you cite, I think the context that we-the-audience are supposed to assume is "the next item of real news on this program" (as opposed to commercials, filler, and fluff). But sometimes it means "the next news program following this one" - a perfectly legitimate interpretation. As you point out, "the next item this station will present to you" is also perfectly legitimate interpretation, but hardly ever the meaning intended by the station.

"Next Wednesday" means the Wednesday that isn't the one this week. In other words, it's always next week.

So, if today is 3/23, next Wednesday refers to 3/28.

However, given that there's confusion, it's best to e-mail him back and confirm.

I have trouble's with this question also, depending on what day of the week it is... instead of using the word next. One should be using "following or upcoming". I would assume, the meant the 28th. I'd ask for clarification!
