Why is a character as evil, vindictive, manipulative and racist as Eric Cartman so lovable?

Because it is different from the usual, always nice, cute and so whatever characters.

Because Eric is everything deep down inside us that is bad and evil. Everything you wanna say but know you shouldnt, Cartman says. So instead of saying it ourselves, we watch south park and wait for Eric to say the racist thing we were thinking the other day and laugh at him so we dont seem like a bad person.

Cartman is the archetype of what modern society has produced. A part of who we are is reflected in him.

Ask my oldest son Eric. That's why I named him Eric. So he could be just like Catman eating and doing whatever the hay he wants. There bambinos for God sakes. Let them own the school and beat up the principle! The Daddy's dead anyways so they hate their prostitute mother. Ofcourse.

I think his style, delivery, and voice are just so funny that anything he says is hilarious. He is a terrible personality, but he does cover all bases. He's an equal opportunity offender.

we love to hate him.
he thinks/says the most outrageous things, but there has to be a little bit of truth it them for it to be funny. he takes common fears and misconceptions and turns them up to "11."
if he were a real person then he'd be a total douche, but as a character he serves as a metaphor for the craziness that presents itself in everyday life.

Because we love people with flaws. It is because he is so bad that we love him. If he was a little less, he wouldn't be as amusing.
