Are you learning in school or do you want to do it on your own? In the high school or college setting it is a bit harder as they put so much emphasis on grammer. Classes outside or that setting (say Berlitz) are better and more intuitive. Why?

Because they teach it in a more intuitive way. It's kind of as if you were just dropped in some country. You would first learn the things that you need to function not say "my frog is green" or something. Look at English and most people use acertain number of words and phrases in day to day life.

Any of the tapes or software will work but you might have to try a few until you find one you like. But in the learning day to day thing........ renting movies in that language helps the most. You can see what people are doing and after awhile you will see where words are used. Your brain will start filling in the blanks.

Depending on what language you want to learn kid shows in that language are the best. Sesame street. The language is simple. Or for some people getting a book in that language (any but a kid book is OK) and deciphering it with a dictionary, step by step works.

Start from square one. What type of learner are you? Not everyone learns from the same method. If you are unsure consider this; if you were learning English, which method would help you most? There are several ways to learn a language. i.e. The majority of folks learn by sight. Mentally picture something with a word. This can be done successfully with learning a foreign language as well as for memory. Once you understand your own learning style, you will be able to grasp the language. Good luck.

Hi, I found that PIMSLEUR methods are very effective. They have a very clever way of teaching language

I tried Michael Thomas... not good enough in my opinion

Of course, the best you can do is to go and live in the country of the language you like to learn... nothing better than this

The plus is to have friends learning with you or/and speaking this language fluently

Start at a young age. It's probably most effective because if you teach someone a language at a young age, they don't think about it, and they just get the concept of it. That's why I know more english than my native language, cantonese. I'm in junior high, and I noticed that even though the teacher's teaching french, I don't remember anything from it because I thought too much about it.
