The song is actually about Buddy Holly. That was the day the music died. Many people get it confused and say that it was about the Bopper and Richie Valens too but none of them were married. Just Buddy. The song fits with Holly perfect.

Dude, IDK how old you are but in those days most songs didn't necessarily have a meaning. If there was one, and that's a BIG if, I think it was maybe about the deterioration of American values and most definitely about the Vietnam War. It came out during that time and everybody just dropped acid and wrote songs because we were just so sad and afraid. Kinda like now! Good songs! But not always songs that made sense. VERY interesting question tho, I'll enjoy reading the interpretations. Thanks
Peace,
Laurie

Anything you find online will be only that person or persons interpretation of the lyrics. Don McClean has never told the public what the song meant. He is the only one that really knows. But to us lod people it is a classic. One of the songs that makes you remember what was going on in your life back then.

Asked what "American Pie" meant, McLean once replied, "It means I never have to work again." "You will find many 'interpretations' of my lyrics but none of them by me...Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence." but check out this site its all about what the lyrics mean http://www.faqs.org/faqs/music/american-pie/
