It's not critical like the brakes, but it will effect the handling severely. It's function is to keep the body of the car level when you are going around a turn. Without it you will have pronounced body roll and a decreased cornering ability. In a bigger car it is pretty important. You will definately want to replace it as soon as you can. BUt you should be able to drive it to the shop without any trouble.

The sway bar keeps the wheels on either side of it in tandem so that when one goes up, the other is forced down. You will notice increased tire wear and sloppy handling without it, but it's not necessary for the daily drive. Just handle her gently because if it starts slipping in a turn the entire weight of the van is going to plop onto that one side.

Just so you know, a lot of Mustang people into drag racing remove sway bars. However, I never did because it decreases your handling ability as others have mentioned.

It isn't completely necessary, but I would fix it whenever you can. It isn't that hard to replace on most vehicles. :)
