Battery acid, which is diluted sulphuric acid will dissolve aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel and many other common metals. However the only way to "melt" aluminum is with heat. Aluminum melts at 1220 degrees Farenheit. If your project involves melting metal to be used in casting you must use old cast, or castable aluminum. Soda/beer cans are much too pure to be used for casting. NOTE: disolving any metal or any other substance in acid can cause extremely harmful or deadly fumes. DO NOT attempt a project like this indoors, wear eye protection (full face shield), acid proof gloves. and an approved vapor mask or fresh air respirator.

You can melt aluminum rod with a Map gas/Oxygen torch. You do not need accetylene tanks.

Buy the alum welding rod at welding supply house for about $2 a stick and use the Mapgas/Oxygen torch to melt it down. This is a common practice used in welding aluminum. Yes, you do need a set of goggles and and gloves, but nothing much out of the ordinary required here.

MapGas/oxygen torch at Lowes for about $25 or Home Depot or borrow one from a friend. Or if you know a friend i the Air Conditioner business borrow their Turbo Torch/Acetylene to melt the rod down.

First, no metal is an acidic metal. If all you need is a hole, drill one. Battery acid, H2SO4, is strong and will burn you up if it gets on you. It might etch some aluminum, but probably will not eat through. Heat is about all you can try.

Of course not.

You might be able to dissolve it, but you cant melt it.
Good batteries are usually Alkaline these days, and Aluminium is an acidic metal, if pHed at all. So you will possibly get a reaction, and a bad smell.
