Let's say you are a 28 year old guy living in Tennessee. How much per year or hour, week, etc is needed for that one person (no dependants, etc.) to live an average living. You would think minimum wage at full time hours should ideally be enough, but our society is screwed up and I don't see how this is possible at 5.15 per hour. After taxes, you make like 3.85 an hour! How can you pay rent, car note, car insurance, phone, electricity, water, food, gas, and other random day to day living expenses. Is 8.00 an hour enough? 10.00? What do you all make an hour around this age and how are you surviving? Am I doing something wrong, but I'm honestly living paycheck to paycheck and some days have to go without dinner and such just to make it that extra day because something came up, like the power bill is more than usual or the like. I make 10 an hour (40 hrs week). Am I bad with money or is this normal? What do you guys make and what are your expenses? Do you live comfortably or no?

I'm a 24-year-old female living in Tennessee (no dependents, etc.). I make $9.44/hr and work 168 hours/month. I live paycheck-to-paycheck. I am in credit card debt simply because some months, I couldn't buy groceries or pay the utility bill otherwise. You aren't bad with money. You, like I, just don't make enough money to survive.

Your kinda bad with money, but it would be much easier and more comfortable if you could make $16 an hour. You need to look at where you are living and what you are driving and see where you can cut your expenses. Maybe you can find a place for less. Don't settle.
That's the same problem I have with being comfortable. the only way to stay comfortable is to never be comfortable with how much money you make or how much you spend. It's a trap. I would give up all the luxuries in the world to have no stress. But making the necessities is stressful nowadays. whatever you do don't have kids.

well, I don't think you are bad... but the more you earn Uncle Sam will get... I make 10.50 an hour but I still come up short some months... and with two growing boys I barely make ends meet.... I don't live where I would like to but then again I have a lot to be thankfull for... I would think more than 15 - 20 dollars or more... to make a comfortable living....

There's no answer to this question. The only "correct" answer is to live below your means.

But, my guess would be that a single guy would need to make about $30,000/yr in order to afford a car, rent, insurance, food and common utilities.

If you're willing to take in a roommate and/or cut your utilities to survival-only (no phone, no cable, no internet), you could get by on $25,000
