I've never been a sub-teacher, but I am step parent and I think your analogy is fitting!! :-)

in some ways yes it is kind of like being a step parent
like when you tell the kids to do something they don't always feel they need to listen because you aren't their "regular teacher"

Well, they are both like a substistute because youre not the real mom of a child and youre not the real teacher of a child.
