Why do other people live together?...or why do I? I don't .
I think girls especially are very foolish to go this route, instead of waiting for commitment and marriage,. This is because there is a basic truth that if a guy can get sex without marriage, why should he bother to get married? And if a girl is foolish enough to give it away, that usually isn't the girl the guy ends up marrying....it is sad, but true...and it hasn't changed.
Girls act desperate and give in....and when the relationship ends, which it usually does,....the emotional impact is just as bad as a divorce...so what did she gain? And having no wifely rights...she lost that as well....
So your question "Why do do that?" is right on! If you are smart...you don't!

Well since I'm married I'm not sure I should have clicked answer this question, but since I did I will take a stab at it. I suppose it's for diverse reasons. Convenience, love, companionship, no, I change my mind. There are just too many reasons that I could come up with to type and actually after I think about it; it doesn't really concern me that much.

Convenience, finances, and stability. We both have kids, his come over every other weekend and mine are here all the time. We were both financially strapped living seperately, but together we do more than just "get by".
After going through a lot of bad things with my ex and dealing with a lot of divorce not just in my own life, but in his and my family's we also wanted to be sure it would work out before we tied the knot. Living with someone you have to learn to compromise.. and you learn things about yourself and your SO that you wouldn't otherwise.
With my ex, I learned after we got married, had a fam, etc that he was really bad with money.. that he literally just pissed money away. He would hide the fact that he forgot to turn his paystubs in.. or that he had a lot of online porn bills, etc. I learned the hard way that some of these things weren't uncovered until after we lived together. I'm not going through that again.

My lady and I have been together for 10 yrs. living together for 8 and are very much still in love. We are not religious and don't see much point in pretending to be for a ceremony. The joint tax return and ability to see each other in the hospital if something tragic happened are our only impetus to get wed. We will eventually have a pagan wedding on the beach in just our birthday suits with our kitty cat Jasmine as our priestess(she knows she's god anyhow).

For me it was because I was living in hospital accomodation and couldn't have a "boy" stay over. Ridiculous! They wanted people to stay in the small town that I live in, but you couldn't have sex! So I found another job and moved, and my bf moved in with me, been happy ever since.

Convenience. Plus I did not plan to get married. I was content to just live with my cutie. But he asked and I answered! :-)

I wish I knew...I certainly don't need all the hassle and bullshit I've been getting lately. Its just nice to have someone to come home to every once in a while. Most people don't want to be alone I guess
