It is an Asian sole or freshwater sole i have got. I have read things on the web saying that as they get older they are best kept in a tank with some salt in it. Does anyone know if they are ok in fresh water?

Should be fine for quite a while. A little salt in a freshwater tank is generally a good thing anyway, so adding a teaspoon per 10 gallons or so will not be a problem and will probbaly make the sole very happy. Glad you were able to ID him!

Most soles are the marine type that sometimes swim into fresh waters when they are small but as they grow bigger will tend to swim back into salty waters[brackish]. You will need to add some marine salt...one teaspoon to a ten gallon tank of water.

They should be fine in fresh water. Look at the website below and it will tell you everything from behaviour to living conditions. It is good - i have used it for my tropical fish :) make sure it is properly oxygenated!
