Sunflower Seeds?

I know this is a kinda stupid question, but i've always wondered if sunflower seeds come from the actual sunflower, or do the sunflower seeds come first.
so what comes first the sunflower or the seed (with shell)?
and where do they come from?

Sunflower seeds grow in the eye of the flower - like the center of a daisy. The petals on a sunflower are usually not but three or four inches long (and yellow), but the center where the seeds grow can be as large or larger than a dinner plate. You could plant the raw seeds and get a sunflower. Of course, the ones we eat are roasted. Raw seeds don't taste good.

What is usually called the flower is actually a head .The outer flowers are the ray florets .The florets inside the circular head are called disc florets.The disc florets mature into what are traditionally called "sunflower seeds", but are actually the fruit (an achene) of the plant. The true seeds are encased in an inedible husk.

Yes the sunflower seeds come out of the middle of the flower after it begins to dry. The birds love them. They are fun and easy to grow in a sunny spot. You get a pack off a seed rack, possibly in your local safeway store..... and now they are coming in all kinds of colors.

i'm addicted to them. heavily, when I initiate ingesting them i won't be able to provide up for luggage and days on end. they might desire to be those int he shell - and that i prefer Davids variety.
