Aren't they just two sides of the same coin?

Boy people have some real misconceptions on what they actually believe, gesh. The main fundamental difference between conservatives (Reps) and liberals (Dems) are:

Conservatives believe the governments role is to protect our freedoms (i.e. military, less gun control, free market, freedom to live (pro-life), personal responcibility, etc.). Hence a smaller central government that is mostly set up for national security.

Liberals on the other hand see government as an avenue to decide/help those who can't help themselves (i.e. social security, medicare, schools, minimum wage, restrictions due environment protection, etc.). Hence a larger central government set up for running lots of social programs in all facits of life. If a problem arises, create new program to fix it.

Neither is evil or bad, they just have different ways to handle the problem. Cons see a person out of work as having the potential to be a productive member of society once they can get themselves back into the workforce. Libs see that person as being wronged (whether from being fired, not having the same opportunities as someone else, being discriminated against, etc.) and needs a hand out so they can get on with their life since they know what is best for them. Basically, teach them to fish (Conservative) or give them some fish (Liberal).

Yes.

And yes they are supposed to be just two sides of the same coin.

However in the U.S., somewhere along the line the two sides do what they can to make sure American people never see them meet on common ground.

Well Republicans have a stronger relationship with the Christian conservative base. Republicans are pro-life and Democrats are usually pro-choice. Republicans are against gay marriage while Democrats atleast support civil union, and most democrats will not vote for any constitutional ban on gay marriages. Democrats are pro-environment while Republicans believe Global Warming is a myth. Democrats also support labor unions and raising the minimum wage while Republicans are typically against such policy change.

Republicans listen to Limbaugh, their channeling speaker of truth, and wait for his transmissions of what to think on any given day, Democrats do not.
